Neuropsychological Evaluations

Neuropsychological evaluations (also referred to as NeuroPsych testing) are comprehensive assessments used to assist your doctors in understanding how your brain is functioning. Neuropsychological batteries are designed to identify the severity of cognitive and behavioral impairments.

Our evaluations are specifically tailored for the individual examinee and the referral question. These referrals often address dispositional planning, cognitive intervention, and work accommodations. Neuropsychological batteries may include tests that assess memory, processing speed, attention, judgment, reasoning, problem-solving, language, executive functions, intelligence, personality, or motor functions.

The results enable us to work out a pattern of relative cognitive strengths and weaknesses, that indirectly yields information concerning the structural, functional integrity of a patient’s brain. Moreover, it may reveal potential areas for further intervention or to assist with impediments to treatment.

We specialize in comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations of:

  • Professional and elite athletes, where we offer pre-season baseline tests with testing repeated to monitor recovery after concussive injury
  • Individuals who have acquired concussions / Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Organic brain dysfunction (i.e., brain tumor, anoxia, seizure disorder)
  • Neurological injury (i.e., stroke, open or closed traumatic brain injury)
  • Cognitive decline due to neurodegenerative disease (i.e., dementia, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis)
  • Other relevant medical histories
  • ADHD testing for adults

Other evaluation service offered:

IQ testing
Many private schools, summer programs, and community center boards may require IQ testing as part of the qualification process. We offer IQ testing for adults and adolescents.

What’s the difference between neuropsychological testing and standard psychological assessments?

A standard psychological assessment typically evaluates general cognitive and personality functioning and is geared to diagnose psychiatric conditions. A standard evaluation can diagnose a condition such as ADHD based on behavior. Still, it lacks the specificity to understand what underlying neurological process is causing the symptoms and, therefore, cannot give customized recommendations for treatment.

However, neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive processes, where we evaluate neurological disorders and understand the etiology and evolution of a disorder. Neuropsychology is the unique integration of genetic, developmental, and environmental history with testing data to better understand brain functioning. With a comprehensive assessment of a person’s cognitive and personality function, we may specify both the origin and development of a disorder and customize recommendations.
